Why You Should Use Biodegradable Products 

If a product can be broken down into smaller components and eventually decay, then it is referred to as biodegradable. On the other hand, if it doesn’t break down, then it’s called a non-biodegradable product. Generally speaking, all textile and paper products are biodegradable, while traditional plastics that are made from petroleum bases are not biodegradable.  

 

What’s so good about the trend today is that many plastics are manufactured to become biodegradable materials instead of non-biodegradable products. These plastics are used to wrap consumer products so there becomes a healthier option. Such plastics are made from corn and other plant bases and their use proposes a lot of efficiency and environmental advantages over their non-biodegradable counterparts. 

Advantages of Using Biodegradable Products 

When biodegradable products are used properly, then there are a lot of advantages for people and the environment. Some of the advantages enjoyed are:

The manufacturing of biodegradable plastic saves oil and consumes less energy. Biodegradable plastics are fuel efficient choices because they are made from renewable resources like potato starch, corn, and sugar cane. No oil is used in the manufacturing process so about 200,000 barrels of oil are saved per day.   

  1. Less Pollution

Manufacturing biodegradable plastic products don’t produce as much pollution as regular plastics. Additionally, these products break back down into non-toxic components. In essence, they don’t leach dangerous chemicals that may poison the water. They also won’t go through the process of off-gassing that may pollute the air. Studies show that biodegradable plastic products produce far fewer greenhouse gasses than the traditional petroleum-based plastic products.  

However, there are some disadvantages to this as well. The corn and other plant-based materials used in the production of biodegradable plastics are oftentimes genetically modified crops. As such, they may create erosion and other effects. This is a reminder that we shouldn’t discard the good in pursuit of the perfect.

It’s possible to compost biodegradable plastics along the most common biodegradable paper products, as well as food and agricultural wastes. All of these trashes will turn into rich humic materials, which as a result, may improve water and nutrient retention. They also help grow healthier plants, the types that are less dependent on pesticides and chemical fertilizers.  

Right now, biodegradable plastics are composted in commercial facilities that maintain high composting temperatures. They’re very much unlike paper and textile items that can easily be composted in backyards. However, the number composting facilities that can handle biodegradable plastics is rising, with more and more states, cities, and municipalities around the world increasing their respective recycling and composting goals.  

Effect on Rubbish Removal 

Needless to say, the awareness of using biodegradable plastic reduces trash. This is actually advantageous for everyone, as rubbish removal becomes even more manageable because of it. With only the trash that has to be brought to the landfill collected by rubbish removal experts, there is a lot of energy saved. This reduction in carbon footprint can definitely make a positive effect to the environment. Do your share and opt to use only biodegradable plastics today.
